Beat The Heat This Summer With Our Tips For Seniors
Australia is known for its incredibly hot weather, especially in the summer. As we grow older, our bodies find it more difficult to regulate heat as efficiently as we did when we’re young. As a result, it is important to take precautionary measures, especially during the summer months, to ensure that you’re able to enjoy the warmer weather safely.
Here are four of our top tips to tackle the heat this summer:
1. Stay Hydrated
As a common heat related condition, hydration can be very serious and sometimes result in a fatal outcome. In order to combat this, it is recommended that an individual should drink a minimum of two litres of water per day. Keeping the body hydrated is important and regularly sipping on water throughout the day should assist throughout the warmer months.
2. Wear Protective Clothing
When the summer months grow near, so do the plans for more outdoor activities. Spending days outside are always enjoyable but it is important to keep in mind the importance of wearing clothing to suit the weather conditions. Wearing full coverage clothing, including hats and sunglasses, will ensure that your skin remains protected. Make sure that your clothing is lightly coloured and lightweight to minimise the risk of overheating.
3. Keep Out Of The Sun
Even though summer activities like going to the beach are very appealing, it is especially important for seniors to avoid spending long periods of time in the sun. Try to stay cool this summer by taking breaks inside or in cool, shaded areas. Keep your home cool and try to avoid warmer environments where possible.
4. Slip, Slop, Slap!
Last but not least, apply sunscreen. Regardless of whether or not you plan on being out in the sun for long periods of time, it is important to apply sunscreen. Sunscreen contains various protective factors that reduce the harmful effects that the sun’s UV rays have on your skin. We recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF level of at least 30+ for the best protection from the sun.
