Another option to help with self-funded private care
If you do not meet the eligibility requirements of any government subsidy, another option to help with self-funded private care would be the early release of superannuation on compassionate grounds. In some instances, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) can approve for the early release of your superannuation on compassionate grounds to help you pay for medical expenses (for you or a dependent), palliative care for a terminal illness, and the modification of your home or vehicle for the special needs of you, or your dependent owing to a severe disability.
To be eligible for this, you (or the dependent for home-care) must have:
- A life threatening illness or injury;
- Acute or chronic pain; or
- Acute or chronic mental illness; or
- For disability – have a physical or mental impairment which either temporarily or permanently limits one of more of their core functional capabilities.
