The CAREGiver Virtual Learning Pathway

Designed for new CAREGivers, our CAREGiver Orientation is a package of training conducted over two and a half days. The program is developed to include essential learning material to understand the structure, policies, procedures, and processes of Home Instead and the corresponding legislative acts and responsibilities to provide high quality care to our Home Instead clients.

Description

Day 1 consists of three Virtual Trainer-Led Sessions including Orientation, Recognising Diversity and Workplace Health and Safety to provide our CAREGivers with the essential skills needed to care for our Home Instead clients.

Course outline
  • Orientation 3.5 Hours

    The Orientation Trainer-Led Session promotes the processes, policies, State and Federal legislation regarding care provision within Home Instead in Australia.

    These sessions will also have a corresponding Empower web-based assessment for completion by attendees, managed by the Academy Administration Team.

    Objectives and Content

    By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

    • Understand the Strategic Direction and Mission of Home Instead
    • Apply the Principles of Building Trust, Taking the Lead and Sharing Your Heart
    • Understand the responsibilities of the CAREGiver role within Home Instead.
  • Recognising Diversity 1.5 Hours

    This session describes the skills and knowledge required to work respectfully with people from diverse social and cultural groups and situations, including Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander people.

    These sessions will also have a corresponding Empower web-based assessment for completion by attendees, managed by the Academy Administration Team.

    Objectives and Content

    By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

    • Understand the definitions of identity, diversity and culture and apply principles of culturally safe care to everyone
    • Understand the legislation to promote cultural awareness and safety and promote human rights
    • Understand the principles of equality and equity
    • Understand the key groups with diverse needs in ageing within Australia.
  • Workplace Health and Safety 2 Hours

    The Workplace Health and Safety Trainer Led Session applies the policy, process and procedures within Home Instead to understand the delivery of high quality, safe, effective care.

     This session also includes three simulation workshops:

    • Complete the Home Instead Academy, Infection Control Observation (donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment)
    • Complete the Home Instead, Home Risk Assessment Form

    These sessions will also have a corresponding Empower web-based assessment for completion by attendees, managed by the Academy Administration Team.

    Objectives and Content

    By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

    • Understand general safety principles in care delivery and within the workplace
    • Apply principles of infection control
    • Understand and apply the principles of Medication Prompting within Home Instead
    • Understand how to maintain your own, and the client’s safety within the workplace/home environment

Building on the foundations from Day 1, Day 2 includes Virtual Trainer-Led Sessions focused on Manual Handling, Technology Infection Control and Personal Care Training.

Course outline
  • Manual Handling 3.5 Hours

    The Virtual Manual Handling Trainer Led Session will explore safe concepts for assisting clients to mobilise.

    This session also includes a simulation workshop to:

    • Understand and practice safe, manual handling techniques
    • Complete the Home Instead Academy, Manual Handling Practical Skills Assessment.

    These sessions will also have a corresponding Empower web-based assessment for completion by attendees, managed by the Academy Administration Team.

    Objectives and Content

    By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

    • Understand the definition of safe manual handling
    • Understand the basic physiology of the spine
    • Understand the risks associated with poor manual handling techniques
    • Demonstrate safe manual handling techniques according to Home Instead policy.
  • Technology 1 Hours

    The Virtual Technology Trainer Led Session enables CAREGivers to understand and utilise the digital platforms used for effective communication and education within Home Instead and the Home Instead Academy.

    Objectives and Content

    By the end of the session, attendees will be able to:

    • Use the Empower Learning Management System (SABA) to access theoretical learning and assessment for CAREGiver onboarding and Professional Development
    • Use the AlayaCare mobile application and understand how to navigate the system to effectively understand and communicate care regarding Home Instead clients and their office.
  • Infection Control 1.5 Hours

    The Virtual Infection Control Trainer Led Session applies the policy, process and procedures within Home Instead to understand the delivery of high quality, safe, effective care.

     This session also includes a simulation workshop:

    • Complete the Home Instead Academy, Infection Control Observation (donning and doffing of Personal Protective Equipment)

    These sessions will also have a corresponding Empower web-based assessment for completion by attendees, managed by the Academy Administration Team.

  • Personal Care 1.5 Hours

    These sessions will also have a corresponding Empower web-based assessment for completion by attendees, managed by the Academy Administration Team.

Virtual Medication Assistance

Description

This virtual trainer led session highlights the differences between Medication Prompting and Medication Assistance and Home Instead’s policies and procedures to support clients to safely manage their medication. All Key Players and CAREGivers who are involved in supporting a client with complex care needs should undertake this training to understand which types of medication they can assist their client with, whilst also learning which medications which are outside of the scope of medication assistance for a Home Instead CAREGiver.

Course outline

This session also includes a simulation workshop to:

  • Demonstrate competency in assisting with medication
  • Complete a competency assessment for medication assistance.

Objectives and Content

By the end of the session, attendees will be able to understand:

  • The definitions and types of medications
  • Duty of care in medication assistance
  • Role of the CAREGiver and scope of role for medication assistance
  • Types of medication errors and how they should be effectively managed and communicated
  • How to assist with medications using the seven Rights and Responsibilities framework.

Prior to enrolment previous completion of Workplace Health and Safety, Infection Control, Manual Handling and Medication Assistance Web based modules (and associated assessments) need to have been completed.
